I started looking for a place too late after the semester began, so I didn't have many options. Fortunately, I found a 33m² unit, though it really made me realize how expensive Seoul is. Although the private bathroom was located outside the room, it was for my exclusive use, which wasn't bad; however, the lack of a window meant the exhaust fan only ran when the light was on. There was a strong smell of mold, and even though I used deodorizers, they didn't help, so I mostly showered at the gym. One side of the bed was sagging. Since I wasn't sleeping there for long periods, I just made do with sleeping there about 4–5 times a week. I only ate snacks like gummies, chips, or canned drinks in the room once or twice. Cleaning up trash was too much of a hassle, so I ate all my meals at the cafeteria. On the evening of May 24th—after being away for two days due to a busy schedule—I found a cockroach on my bed. I requested pest control, but my request was denied due to cost issues, as they claimed to conduct regular treatments and hadn't received complaints from other rooms; they also said no staff were available because it was a public holiday. They finally applied roach bait strips on the 26th. I stayed away for nearly ten days, occasionally stopping by to thoroughly spray two different types of insecticide. I figured that by then, any roaches would have either died or moved out, so I moved back in, albeit with some lingering unease. Perhaps because I sprayed insecticide before heading to school on the days I slept there, I didn't see any more cockroaches until I moved out. The next tenant will be moving into a room that has been thoroughly treated. It’s a neighborhood with many restaurants, so I doubt pest control once every two months is sufficient. I never visited the shared spaces, so I don't know what they're like. However, seeing foreigners bring in groceries suggests that cooking is likely possible. The room has a window, is close to the school, and is right next to a convenience store.
I lived well and I'm leaving.
